The fastest way to build real boxing skill. One coach. One member. Every drill built around your goals. Available in 30 and 45-minute sessions at both Onyx Boxing locations — Scottsdale and Gilbert/Mesa.
Walk into Onyx Boxing for a private session and you'll have the full attention of a USA Boxing certified coach for the entire duration. No waiting for rounds to end. No sharing the coach's attention with seven other people. Your session is completely yours — and it's built around exactly what you need.
Sessions take place in the boxing ring and on the aqua bags on the floor. Each one is different. Each one is personal. And each one is designed to make you measurably better than when you walked in.
Your coach holds the mitts and calls the combinations live. You react, you adjust, you throw with real timing. Mitt work builds hand speed, accuracy, combination fluency, and the ability to read and respond to a moving target. There is no better way to develop boxing reflex than live pad rounds with a certified coach who knows exactly where to hold and when to move.
The Aqua Training Bags on the floor at Onyx are unlike any heavy bag you've hit before. Water-filled and body-shaped, they respond to your punches the way a real opponent would — absorbing impact naturally and rewarding proper technique with immediate feedback. Your coach works with you on power generation, hip rotation, shoulder alignment, and combination flow against the bag while coaching your body mechanics in real time.
Private sessions in the ring change the way you move. The canvas, the ropes, the corners — they all become part of the training environment. Your coach works with you on footwork patterns, ring control, cutting off angles, and combination sequences that use the full space. Whether you're a first-timer or preparing for competition, the ring is where technique becomes instinct.
Every private training coach at Onyx holds a USA Boxing certification — the national coaching standard used to develop competitive and Olympic-level boxers. This credential requires formal education, practical coaching evaluation, and ongoing certification. When you book a private session at Onyx, you are training with someone who has earned the right to call themselves a boxing coach by the sport's governing body.
Never put on gloves before? Private training is the fastest path to building a proper foundation. Your coach starts from the very beginning — stance, guard, movement — and builds your technique correctly from rep one. No guessing, no bad habits, no confusion.
Already training in group classes? Private sessions take you further, faster. Your coach identifies the specific technical gaps that are holding back your progress and targets them directly. Most members who add 1–2 privates per month notice significant technique improvement within 4–6 weeks.
Training for competition, a specific fitness goal, or adding boxing to your existing sport training? Private sessions allow your coach to design a program specific to your athletic background and performance goals. Conditioning rounds, specific combination drilling, and defensive work can all be structured around your timeline.
Want to maximize caloric output and build lean muscle simultaneously? Private training at Onyx is one of the most efficient workouts available — a 45-minute session with a certified coach pushing your pace is worth two hours of self-directed gym time. Your coach keeps intensity high and rest short, calibrating to your fitness level throughout the session.
Your coach watches how you move, checks your stance and guard, and identifies what you'll focus on. For first-timers, this is where the foundation gets set. For returning members, this is where the session gets targeted to the specific work you need that day.
This is the core of the session. Depending on your goals, you'll work mitts with your coach in the ring, drilling specific combinations and developing reactive accuracy — or work the aqua bags on the floor with your coach coaching your mechanics, power output, and combination timing in real time. Both formats develop different skills and most members rotate between them.
Your coach structures 2–3 minute rounds at a pace calibrated to your current fitness level and pushes you to maintain form under fatigue. This is where boxing-specific conditioning is built — not just cardio, but the ability to execute technique when your arms are burning and your lungs are working. The 45-minute session includes more conditioning volume than the 30-minute session.
Your coach tells you exactly what you worked on, what improved, and what to focus on between sessions. If you're training regularly, your coach tracks your progress and builds a program that compounds session over session. You leave knowing what you accomplished and what's next.

Both sessions include warm-up, technical work (mitts/pads and aqua bag), and coaching feedback. The 45-minute session adds more conditioning rounds — typically 2–3 additional rounds of 2 minutes each — and a longer debrief. If you're newer to boxing or have a specific tight schedule, the 30-minute session is highly effective. If you want more conditioning volume alongside your technique work, the 45-minute session is the better choice.
No. Private training at Onyx Boxing is available to members and non-members alike. If you'd like to try boxing for the first time in a private setting before joining group classes, a private session is an excellent starting point. Sessions are per-session — no membership required.
Wear athletic clothes you can move in. Bring boxing gloves if you have them — wraps are recommended. If you don't have gloves yet, we can discuss options when you arrive. Arrive 5 minutes early so your coach can start your warm-up on time.
Yes. When booking through Mindbody (Scottsdale) or WellnessLiving (Gilbert/Mesa), you can select the specific coach you want to work with based on their availability. If you have a preference but don't see availability online, call us directly and we'll help match you with the right coach and time.
Most members who add private training to their group class routine see the strongest results training privately 1–2 times per month. This provides focused technical coaching that directly accelerates group class progress. Members preparing for a specific goal or competition often train privately more frequently — your coach will discuss what makes sense for your situation.
