Most people who walk into Onyx Boxing for the first time say the same thing afterward: "I had no idea what to expect, and it was nothing like I imagined." Usually, that's a good thing. So let's take the mystery out of it. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out.
Before You Arrive
What to wear
Athletic clothes you can move in — that's it. Shorts or leggings, a t-shirt or tank top. You'll be on your feet the entire class, so athletic shoes are essential. Avoid anything restrictive through the shoulders since you'll be throwing punches for 45–60 minutes.
What to bring
Bring water — you will need it. If you have boxing gloves, bring them. If not, we have gloves at the gym you can borrow for your first session. Hand wraps are recommended to protect your wrists and knuckles. If you don't have them yet, we can help you wrap before class.
Arrive 10 minutes early
For your first class, arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled start. Your coach will introduce themselves, show you how to wrap your hands if needed, point you to a bag, and make sure you're ready when class starts. You will not be thrown into the deep end without any orientation.
The Class Structure
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Every Onyx class starts with a structured warm-up — footwork drills, shadowboxing, and dynamic stretching to get your body ready to move. This is also where your coach covers the basics of stance and guard if you're new. Pay attention here. The warm-up is where the technical foundation gets set.
Technique & Combination Work (20–25 minutes)
Your coach calls out combinations — 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-5-2 — and walks through the technique for each one before you drill it. You'll work on the bag in rounds, typically 2–3 minutes with 30–60 seconds of rest. You do not need to know the numbers. Your coach explains everything. Just follow along and focus on your form.
Conditioning Rounds (10–15 minutes)
The back half of class is where intensity picks up. Combination rounds get longer, rest gets shorter, and your coach pushes your pace. This is where most of the caloric output happens — a 45-minute Onyx class burns between 500 and 800 calories depending on your size and intensity level.
Cool-Down & Stretch (5 minutes)
Class ends with a structured cool-down. Your coach walks you through shoulder and hip stretches. This is a great time to ask questions about technique or what to focus on next class.
The Most Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Swinging too hard. In your first class, focus on technique, not power. Power comes naturally when your mechanics are right.
- Holding your breath. Breathe out with every punch. Your coach will remind you — almost everyone forgets this at first.
- Watching other people. Everyone is too focused on themselves to notice what you're doing. Stay in your lane and work your technique.
- Not coming back for a second class. Day one is the hardest. Day two is dramatically easier. Day three feels like you've been doing this for weeks.
What You'll Feel Afterward
Your shoulders will be tired in a way you've probably never felt before. You'll feel a specific kind of satisfied exhaustion — the kind that comes from doing something genuinely difficult that required real skill and concentration. Most first-timers at Onyx say they're already thinking about when they're coming back before they've even left the building.
