We say it constantly at Onyx: every coach holds a USA Boxing certification. It's on our website, it's in our ads, it's on the wall. But we've never actually explained what that means — what the credential requires, what it certifies, and why we think it's the most important quality marker for any boxing gym in the country. This post fixes that.
What Is USA Boxing?
USA Boxing is the national governing body for amateur boxing in the United States — recognized by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee and the International Boxing Association as the official governing body for the sport. When American boxers compete in the Olympics, they compete under USA Boxing. It is the highest organizational authority for the sport in this country.
What Does the Certification Require?
USA Boxing coaching certification is not a weekend course or an online quiz. The full pathway requires:
- SafeSport training — mandatory abuse prevention education required for all youth-adjacent coaching credentials in the US
- USA Boxing Level 1 Coach Education — covering boxing fundamentals, teaching methodology, safety protocols, ring craft, and boxing-specific conditioning science
- Background check clearance — required for all USA Boxing certified coaches
- Ongoing recertification — certifications require renewal and continuing education to remain active
Why Most Gyms Don't Have It
Here's what most boxing studios won't tell you: the majority of fitness boxing studios — including most major franchise brands — do not require their coaches to hold USA Boxing certification. They may require a personal training certification (ACE, NASM, ISSA), which teaches exercise science but not boxing. They may require their own internal training program. None of these are equivalent to USA Boxing certification.
If you want to learn actual boxing technique from someone formally credentialed in the sport of boxing, USA Boxing certification is the standard to look for.
What This Means for You at Onyx
Every coach on the Onyx Boxing floor — Scottsdale and Gilbert — holds an active USA Boxing certification. Not a selection of them. Not the head coaches. All of them. When you walk into a group class or book a private session at Onyx, you receive instruction from a certified boxing coach by the sport's national governing body, every single time.
The technique you're learning is the same methodology used to develop competitive and Olympic-level boxers. Scaled to fitness, accessible to beginners — but never compromised in its technical foundation.
The Onyx Standard
When Steve founded Onyx Boxing in Scottsdale in 2021, the decision to require USA Boxing certification for every coach wasn't a marketing decision. It was a quality decision. "I wanted to build a gym where the coaching was legitimate. Where someone who walks in off the street takes a group class and learns real boxing from a real boxing coach." Five years and two locations later, that standard hasn't changed.
Train With Certified Coaches
Both Onyx Boxing locations — Scottsdale and Gilbert/Mesa — are staffed exclusively with USA Boxing certified coaches.
