Coach Valerie — Five Years, Day One

Coach Spotlight 4 min read Onyx Boxing Scottsdale

When Onyx Boxing opened in Scottsdale in March 2021, Valerie was already there. Not as a member discovering the gym — as a coach, ready to work. Five years later, she's still the first one to bring the energy and the last one to stop believing in you when you're ready to stop believing in yourself.

How It Started

Val didn't come to boxing through the traditional route. She wasn't a competitive fighter who transitioned to coaching. She came through fitness — through the belief that movement is the most powerful tool most people aren't using the way they should be.

"I always say movement is medicine," she told us. "And boxing is one of the most complete forms of movement there is. It's your entire body, your mind, your timing, your coordination, your conditioning. There's nothing that hits different the way boxing does."

Five Years on the Floor

Five years of coaching at one gym is not common. The fitness industry has notoriously high coach turnover. But ask Val about it and she doesn't hesitate: "This community keeps me here. The members keep me here. Watching someone walk in on day one, barely able to get through warm-up, and then seeing them six months later throwing combinations we would have called advanced when they started — that never gets old."

She describes the transformation as both physical and something harder to quantify. "People come in thinking they're going to get a workout. And they do. But they also leave with something they didn't know they needed — confidence. The kind that comes from doing something hard consistently and getting better at it."

What Makes Val's Classes Different

If you've been in one of Val's classes, you already know the answer: the energy. Her playlist is hip hop because, in her words, "the vibe just hits different for boxing." Her favorite combination to call is 1-2-3-2: smooth, fast, and finishing strong.

"I want everyone to leave feeling like the best version of themselves," she said. "Whether it's your first time or your hundredth, you should walk out of that door feeling stronger and more capable than when you walked in. That's the job."

Life Outside the Gym

Val is a proud mom of two daughters, and she brings the same approach to parenting that she brings to coaching: high energy, genuine belief in the people around her, and the conviction that people are always more capable than they think. "You're stronger than you think and more capable than you know. I'm just here to remind you."
